Want a pi-based domain name? Go long.

π = 3.14159265358979323846264338327950…

It's one of the most recognizable number sequences in the world. So it's no surprise that someone — actually, many someones — has already thought to register a domain name that spells it out.

I got curious: just how many of these pi-flavored domains are already taken? The format I had in mind was 3.14159265.com — where 3 is a subdomain and the digits after the decimal form the base domain. So I wrote a script to check every variant from 2 digits (14.com) all the way up to 30 digits (141592653589793238462643383279.com), across four TLDs: three standard (.com, .net, .org) and .fun just for fun.

Here's what I found.

The short ones are long gone

If you're hoping to grab something under 15 digits, you're almost certainly out of luck — at least on the most recognizable TLDs. Every single 2- through 10-digit variant is registered on those TLDs.

  • 14.com — Registered with GoDaddy. No active website.
  • 141.org — Held by Cloudflare. Probably not a pi fan.
  • 1415.com — GoDaddy again, returning a 403 Forbidden. Someone paid for it and locked the door.
  • 141592.org — Squarespace. Parked.

The .fun TLD is a different story. It's wide open through the first seven digits. 14.fun, 141.fun, 1415.fun? All yours, but for a premium price. For instance, Namecheap lists 14.fun at $812.50 for a one-year registration.

Other less recognizable TLDs like 14.online and 14.tech are available at similar price points.

The middle range gets spotty

Between 8 and 14 digits, the picture gets patchier — and weirder.

141592653.com (9 digits) redirects to a site literally called "314 Digits of Pi." Someone has been playing the long game. They also grabbed the .net.

1415926535897.net and 1415926535897.org (13 digits) both point to a German food delivery website. The domain appears to be a completely unrelated business that just happens to have registered a 13-digit numeric domain. The site's tagline translates to "tastes good and cheap." Delightful.

14159265.com (8 digits) is listed for sale on Spaceship.com for $500.

141592653589.com (12 digits) hosts link spam called "First Dozen Professional Focus."

The cliff: 15 digits or more

This is the big finding. At 15 digits141592653589793 — every major TLD goes dark.

From 15 digits onward, availability is the default, with only a handful of outliers:

  • 16 digits, .com — Registered with Namecheap. No DNS, no site.
  • 19 digits, .net — Registered via Cloudflare. No apparent content.
  • 20 digits, .com — Redirects to Cesium Comics, a webcomic. A genuinely creative use of a 20-digit pi domain.
  • 22 digits, .com — Registered with Squarespace. Probably parked.
  • 26 digits, .com — Registered by Amazon. No public-facing site.
  • 30 digits, .com — Parked with GoDaddy. The full 30-digit pi domain on .com is taken, but .net, .org, and .fun are all free.

What About Rounding?

Everything above uses truncated pi — just cutting off the digits. But a purist might argue that if you're representing pi to N digits, you should round the last digit up when the next digit is 5 or higher.

That changes 16 of the 29 lengths. I checked those rounded variants too.

The short ones are still mostly gone — 142, 1416, 1415927, and 141592654 are all registered on .com. But there's one standout: 141593.com (6-digit rounded pi) is registered with DreamHost and hosts a site literally called "π The Infinite Circle." The .net, .org, and .fun variants are all free, though.

For lengths 10 and up, the rounded variants are almost entirely clean. The shortest rounded domain where all four TLDs are open is 1415926536.com (10 digits, rounded from 1415926535).

What about tau?

Tau (τ = 2π = 6.2831853...) has its own passionate fan base, so I ran the same check for tau-based domains — 6.28318530.com style — from 2 to 8 digits after the decimal, across .com, .net, and .org.

As you might guess, tau clears out much faster than pi.

The shortest tau domain open across all three standard TLDs is 283185, 9 digits shorter than the equivalent pi threshold.

What did I buy?

In my own pursuit of a pi-themed domain name, I was willing to venture into less-recognizable TLDs. But I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a premium domain, so I settled for 14159.email, which set me back $5.

Methodology

I wrote a Python script that ran DNS lookups against all 116 domain combinations (29 digit lengths × 4 TLDs), then followed up with WHOIS queries on any domain that had DNS records. For domains that resolved, I also did a quick HTTP fetch to grab the page title for context. A second pass checked the 64 rounded-variant combinations (16 lengths × 4 TLDs) where rounding would change the last digit. Data was collected on May 25, 2026.
